Marcia Siegel, The Boston Phoenix, July 2007 October 2007 Greetings! We hope you've had a wonderful September and that you've enjoyed our new online features; in addition to seeing us live, we believe this is an exciting way to offer you insight into our work. We are working to make Misnomer a place of continued engagement for our audiences; if you have ideas about how you can be included in our work and art -- please send them our way! Feature of the Month: Misnomer + The Baryshnikov Arts Center We spent September developing our new dances at the Baryshnikov Arts Center as part of the Summer Stages Dance / Baryshnikov Arts Center Residency Project. The residency culminated with three performances of the works-in-progress which will have their full premiere in NYC in March 2008. It was a great honor to work in this beautiful studio and to be recognized by two vibrant and important organizations. The new work features original music by Evan Ziporyn (from The Bang on a Can All-Stars). In March, Evan's music will be performed live. For now, you can see photos of the rehearsals, our showing, and the reception afterward! It delights us that you follow our choreography. Your continued support is invaluable. We'll see you online and later in the theater! :: UPCOMING PERFORMANCES :: Misnomer + The Danish Dance Theatre The internationally acclaimed Danish Dance Theatre has commissioned Chris Elam to create a new choreography, "Labyrinth," on the 10-dancer company. "Labyrinth" will be performed on four stages located within a life-sized labyrinth through which the audience will actively walk during the performance. Chris begins to choreograph this project throughout October while the company is in residence at the Joyce SoHo Theater. Chris then will fly to Denmark in April before the May premiere in Copenhagen. You are invited to see the creative process during two free events: an open rehearsal and a work-in-progress showing. For both of these events you need to RSVP at Joyce SoHo Theater, 155 Mercer St., NYC (212) 431-9233 Oct. 19, 2-4 pm See Chris rehearse members of the Danish Dance Theatre to get insight into the process. Oct. 25, 4-6 pm Join the Artistic Director of the Danish Dance Theatre and Chris Elam when they show their work in progress and take questions from the audience. :: NEWS :: :: AUDIO INTERVIEW on GREAT DANCE This month Doug Fox & Eva Yaa Asantewaa produced an audio interview with Chris that is featured on Great Dance, a dance community site. Past interviews have included Miguel Gutierrez, Nolini Barretto, Ashleigh Leite, and Tony Waag. For the full article with pictures and video, visit Great Dance. :: BUSINESS SECTION of the NY TIMES Marci Alboher of the NY Times wrote a feature that highlighted Misnomer's flexible office environment. The article touched on the innovative ways that Misnomer is incorporating transparency into our work for our audiences: Misnomer is a big proponent of transparency. The company videotapes rehearsals and even office meetings for posting on its video blog, which allows audiences to get a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to run a dance company. "Dance audiences traditionally interact with a dance company for only two hours a year and maybe get a couple of postcards," Mr. Elam said. "But so much happens outside the performance, and we are trying to find ways of making the whole function of the company more open-source." =================================== Treehouse Shakers' Tenth Anniversary Party October 22, 2007 Greetings! November 6, 2007 "How 2 Build A Rapper" Dear Friends of VLA, I hope you can join me for a special (free) screening of the latest project of VLA clients Cetre Pegues and Lewis Powell. The party (with free food!) gets started at 5:30pm and the film will roll promptly at 6:15. A question-and-answer session will be held with the filmmakers after the screening. Seating extremely limited. VLA must confirm that you are on our guest list in order to attend. Additional details and a link to the trailer are attached and noted below. RSVP to me by reply e-mail to ensure your seat at this exciting event. Hope to see you there! Sincerely, Ben "How 2 Build A Rapper" This DocuDramedy follows a young artist as he's put through the paces by two producers looking to answer the question: Can You Build a Rapper? The producers, Lew and Cetre, set out for an open mic night in Watts, Calif., and find JP, a raw, 24-year- old kid from St. Augustine, Fla., with no skills of any use to a rapper--he plays the acoustic guitar, for goodness sake! In the DocuDramedy, JP shares his personal stories and he takes us home to Florida to meet his friends and family. Back in LA, the Producers begin JP's transformation--he records a demo and learns the essentials of hip-hop culture, including the "right way" to tip an exotic dancer, get a haircut at a predominantly black barbershop, how to fire a firearm like a "gangsta," and a host of other hilarious scenarios. Industry professionals such as Manager Mark Byers, Celebrity Stylist Patrick Cooper, Platinum Recording Artist Big Boi of Outkast, Super Producers Jazze Pha, Chucky Thompson, Zukhan Bey, and Sr. VP of Publishing Valerie Patton all lend a hand to teach what he'll need to know to make it. We'll follow scrawny JP as he becomes a hip-hop savvy cat who can kick it on Crenshaw. See Lew work diligently in the studio with JP and see Cetre pound the pavement in search of the elusive record deal. Watch JP at another Open Mic Night after much practice to see if he improves. The film culminates in an actual A&R meeting with both Capitol Records' Darius Jones and Interscope Records' Angelo Sanders. Maybe the Producers are the "real artists" and you really can build a rapper! Benjamin J. A message from Loot Music Group;
What's up with you? I hope all is well in your world. Me...I've just been grindin, as usual. I wanted to reach out to you and ask for your help. I joined a website (http://www.slicethepie.com) based out of London a couple months back and submitted 3 songs to be judged. It's basically an online showcase where the people listen to all the artists in a particular showcase and rank each song. The 20 artists with the highest ranking are selected to move on to the next round. Thousands of artists were in my showcase and after the judging was complete, I finished in the top 20.
What makes this website different from all the other sites I've seen out there is that they are providing the winning artist with $31,000 to release their project. Needless to say, $31,000 would be a tremendous help. Therefore, I'm asking you to PLEASE help me out here and vote for me.
I'm already a member of so many websites that I lose track of logins and passwords as is, but this one is for your boy so please join. Go to http://www.slicethepie.com and sign up for FREE. The signup should be self-explanatory, but if you have ANY problems...just let me know and I'll walk you through it. Once you've signed up, click on "SHOWCASES". You will see the showcase labeled "ARENA 2". After clicking on "ARENA 2", click on "VOTE". Scroll down the page until you see LOOT. My name and 3 songs will be listed next to my picture. Just click on "VOTE" next to my picture and you'll be good to go.
PLEASE FORWARD THIS ALONG TO YOUR PEOPLE AND ENCOURAGE THEM TO VOTE TOO. YOUR LOVE & SUPPORT IS TRULY APPRECIATED!!
