SINCE 2001, The Living Word Festival (LWF) has hosted an annual gathering of future thinking, urban centered performers, placing our artist-curated performance series and educational forums in one of the country's most generous audience environments. Through seven festivals, more than 25,000 people have enjoyed several hundred artists of various disciplines from around the country in venues as varied as San Francisco's Museum of Modern Art and West Oakland's Black New World. In October 2008, Artistic Director and 2006 United States Artists Rockefeller Fellow Marc Bamuthi Joseph initiates a conversation between novelists (Adam Mansbach) dancers, (Jason Samuels Smith and Jacinta Vlach) performance artists (Guillermo Gomez Pena), environmentalists (Green for All; Global Exchange) and musicians (Mos Def, Goapele, The Kev Choice Ensemble). Most prominently, LWF 2008 features new generation theater including the LWP commissions War Peace: The One Drop Rule, written by The Get Back Crew with a score by SF Jazz Youth All-Stars, a new solo work by spoken word pioneer Regie Cabico; and the SF Premiere and co-production of Mapa Corpo2 by Guillermo Gomez-Pena's La Pocha Nostra. In addition LWP is initiating a community based eco-equity project called red, black, and GREEN, highlighting bamboo construction, skateboard and low rider bike expos, The 2nd Annual Estria Invitational Living Word Graffiti Battle and live performance by Mos Def.
SPREAD THE WORD. . . . . .This is where you want to be. . .hip hop does not dominate the body of content, and yet, hip hop is IN the body of the players on stage.
A festival born out of forced labor AND pandemic unemployment. Jim Crow and Reaganomics. Blues and Hip Hop. After-flood America.
Since 2001, The Living Word Festival has focused on a particular school of theatrical thought: Saul Williams, Carl Hancock Rux, Danny Hoch, Sarah Jones, Rennie Harris, Cristal Truscott, Mos Def. For 13 years, Youth Speaks Inc has identified, and supported a national network of teen poets, convening them annually as Brave New Voices. As these young people come of age as practicing writer-performers, they represent a shift in linguistic approach and a rise in standard of performance poetry for proscenium.
In 2008 and beyond, Artistic Director Marc Bamuthi Joseph brings together the most compelling of these intra-aesthetic, intergenerational voices. Universes and Guillermo Gomez Pena. Chinaka Hodge and Nicole Klaymoon. Tania Isaac and DJ Qbert. Dave Eggers and George Watsky.
A Left Coast, Left-Leaning(out of your Hybrid Impala) kinda interdisciplinary artist-curated Festival.
Living.
Word.

This event takes place on November 8 th , at 7:30 pm at the Mount Nittany Middle School Auditorium in State College, PA. The concert, an annual event, gives local talent the opportunity to perform alongside some of the greatest artists in the world. This year, performers include Amy Brandt of the esteemed Suzanne Farrell Ballet and funk tapper George Patterson of the Broadway smash-hit Bring in da’ Noise, Bring in da’ Funk. About the Broadway Connection Program PA Academy of the Arts, a performing arts school in their sixth season, is recognized as Centre County’s link to some of the greatest professional dancers in the world. Since their humble beginnings in Centre Hall, PAA has welcomed at least one world-class guest artist to the academy each year. The Broadway Connection program was designed by directors Sarah & Chuck Mason to expose students to “dance outside the studio walls”, and to give young people a chance to rub shoulders with the finest talent in the business. Over the years, the roster has included: Jason Samuels-Smith (Noise/Funk, So You Think You Can Dance), Ayodele Casel (Law & Order, Bojangles), Heather Cornell (Manhattan Tap), and Roxane Butterfly (Beauteez & the Beat). In addition to building their performing resumes, students are given the opportunity to take master classes with the artists while they are in town. These classes are open to the public, and many Penn State students and faculty as well as other professionals in the area take advantage them. About the Cast Dancers in the youth ensembles range in age from 9 to 20 years old, and they hail from State College, Bellefonte, Centre Hall, Spring Mills, Pine Grove Mills and Port Matilda. This year, Crunch II and Lumie?re II will make their debut performances as a part of the concert. Another very special presentation will occur that evening – the world premiere of choreography by Amy Brandt’s, set on PAA’s Lumie?re Studio Company. (See following pages for biographies of other artists) About the Make-A-Wish Foundation® The Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Greater Pennsylvania grants the wishes of children with lifethreatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. Last year alone they granted 146 wishes to Pennsylvania children. The Make-A-Wish Foundation® is now the largest wish-granting charity in the world, with 71 chapters in the U.S. and its territories. With the help of generous donors and nearly 25,000 volunteers, the Make-AWish Foundation® grants more than 12,500 wishes a year and has granted more than 135,000 wishes in the U.S. since its inception in 1980. For more information about the Make-A-Wish Foundation®, visit www.wish.org or contact the Centre County regional office at (814) 9388888, www.wishgreaterpa.org, and discover how you can share the power of a wish.
