================================= A Message from Eddie Shine: Support Janet Andrews Work If you are able to support Janet's work with a (tax deductible) donation, you can send it to the following address: New Orleans Dance Collective Attn: Janet Andrews 4601 Perelli Drive New Orleans, LA 70127 Thanks again! Eddie Shine .......................................................
Jason Samuels Smith, Janet Andrews, and Pandit Chitresh Das We first got to know Janet in 2006 doing outreach while touring India Jazz Suites. Jason and Dada did master classes at two charter schools where Janet was teaching Tap. Most of you know or have heard me speak of my friend Janet Andrews, a true New Orleans hero who, after losing everything in Katrina, has consistently turned her own adversity into aiding disadvantaged New Orleans youth through dance. When the storm took her home, she lived in a dorm at Tulane and completed a Masters in Social Work so she could better serve the children. When the studio where she taught for many years was ruined, she started the New Orleans Dance Collective (NODC) and taught the youth at limited borrowed space with two other teachers, all of them volunteering their time because the majority of the families could not afford to pay. When kids had no dance clothes or shoes, she spent her own money to provide them with what they needed so they could participate. This past summer, we managed to secure enough funding to bring Jason Samuels Smith from New York and my dear friend Valerie Watson (who teaches African-Haitian and Latin Dance at City College of SF) to teach master classes at her summer intensive. She was able to pay all of the teachers – except herself. In other words, through terribly tough times that continue to this day in New Orleans, Janet has always put the needs of at-risk youth first. This school year she began teaching dance at a Recovery School District high school in the Ninth Ward. All the youth in her classes struggle against severe deprivation and truly harsh circumstances. She tells me that 30 percent or more of her students are heads of household, often living in abandoned houses, parents either absent or incapacitated by drugs. "These kids have nothing, nothing" she told me. After a difficult beginning, Janet's hard work and the magic of dance have at last begun to break through the understandable cynicism and anger these youth feel. A number of them will even be participating in NODC's after-school program, finally getting off the ground after a 2-1/2 year search for space. Also, all 64 students, four teams, will be participating in a dance-off in mid-December, and Janet has promised to take the winning team to a restaurant for dinner. This is a big deal since eating out is not something these kids have experienced, and Janet wants so much to take all of them, but she can only afford to take a smaller group since she's once again coming out-of-pocket to make it happen. When Katrina hit, and we witnessed the horrible aftermath, I know all of us wished there was something we could do to help. Most people don't realize that, for a large majority, conditions in New Orleans are not much improved, and our help is still very much needed. I've chosen to help Janet and NODC in every way I can because I know that by helping her, I'm helping the kids, and I'd like to ask you to join me by sending whatever you can to help these kids too. The New Orleans Dance Collective is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, so everything you give is tax deductible. You can help disadvantaged youth celebrate their work and progress, and support a place for them afterschool where they can learn tools to help them deal with the difficult circumstances they face. Please do whatever you can by sending as much as possible on a one-time or ongoing basis. I can assure you that every dime will be put to good use to help these youth. Please share this letter with others you know who would like to lend a hand to disadvantaged kids in New Orleans. Thank you so much! xxxooo Eddie ================================= www.divinerhythmproductions.com EMPOWER YOUR SOLE!
