News from DEANGELOProductions - September 2009 - Ann Marie DeAngelo
Thank You, Gregory! A Tribute to Dance Legends By Guy Adams
This fall Ann Marie will direct the premiere of Thank You, Greogry - A Tribute to Tap Legends, which debuts on October 2 at Penn State University, followed by a 10-week national tour. This fast-paced evening of entertainment for the whole family takes audiences on an educational journey into the variety inherent in the amazing art form of tap dance. The piece explores how the late, great Gregory Hines brought serious attention to this vibrant art, and how he was a living link between the past, present, and the future.
Conceived by Tony Waag, Thank You, Gregory! stars Jason Samuels Smith (right) along with seven other of the most versatile, dynamic contemporary hoofers on the scene today. Backed by a lively jazz trio, with multimedia projections and narrative, the evening explores a rich and diverse kaleidoscope of tap dance history, artistry, rhythms, and musical feet.

The evening will celebrate a cornucopia of styles from theater to concert dance, television and film in a vibrant homage to American culture. A film montage scripted by PBS producer JoAnn Young and created by JoAnn and Ann Marie will honor our dance heritage. The program will include a look at the new popularity of commercial dance on television that is furthering the growth and proliferation of dance in America.
Talent scheduled to participate includes American Tap Youth Ensemble, Laura Benanti, Bullettrun, Cedar Lake Dance Ensemble, Dance Times Square, Decadancetheatre, Nicole Fosse and an excerpt from Dancin’, Valerie Harper, The Lombard Twins, New York City Ballet, Samuel Ramey, Ann Reinking, Rock Steady Crew, Sonya Tayeh Dance, The Street Beats Group, A Tribute to Duke Ellington, and more!

In Case You Missed It...
May 2009 – Hip Hop in London
Ann Marie directed Gettomade: A Journey Thru Time for Hip Hop pioneer Mr. Wiggles at Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London as part of the International Hip Hop Dance Theater Festival. The work takes a look at Mr. Wiggles’ groundbreaking career through story, dance, and visuals.

About IN THE MIX! Gettomade is a part of a larger show currently development called IN THE MIX! The show explores the artistic process of creating a show by telling the story of each performer, some of whom are pioneers of their art form. A True Creative Force in Dance By Guy Adams
Ann Marie DeAngelo was pegged by Backstage as “a multiple career artist.” Her dance career with the Joffrey Ballet spanned 10 years, and she later became the company’s Associate Director. Before that, she was the founding Artistic Director of Ballet de Monterrey (1990), and of her own experimental company, which toured Europe extensively in the late 1980s. She has been the producer and director for seven Gala benefit evenings for Career Transition For Dancers, at City Center in NYC.
As a choreographer, Ms. DeAngelo’s Bell Witch, a one-act ghost story, was nominated for a Benois de la Danse award in 2004. She has created more than 40 ballets, including participating in Dance Break 2006, a high-profile showcase in the Broadway community.
She has taught at numerous universities, summer dance programs, and schools, and has been movement coach to Bette Midler. She holds a certificate in Arts Administration from New York University.
