Quenia's Samba Workshops at Alvin Ailey
Hi Everyone
Happy New Year 2010 .. I hope your is off to a good start.
In celebration of the upcoming Brazilian Carnaval we are holding
workshops on Sunday February 7th at Alvin Ailey Extension.
There is a page at the Ailey Extension site with details . You can
pay online for the full workshop or pay for individual classes at the
Extension. You also have the option of taking my (Quenia's) regularly
scheduled class on that day ( that will be 4 to 5:30pm special Samba
Da Bahia class )

The workshop will feature
12noon - 1:30pm: Samba Drumming with Nick Birmelin
Learn to play percussion in the style of a Samba Reggae bloco from
Salvador. Open to all levels, this workshop will focus on fundamental,
hands-on techniques that will enable you to play Samba Reggae. This 1
1/2 hour workshop will show you the function of each instrument and
the breaks within an instrumental arrangement. The workshop will be
taught by Nick Birmelin, musical director of Grupo Ribeiro.
Instruments will be provided for a $5 rental fee. The supply is
somewhat limited, so if you have one of your own ( snare, surdo,
tamborim, timbau, repinique), please feel free to bring it!
2:00 - 3:00pm: Samba in Platform Heels Workshop with Quenia
Dance Samba like a Carioca with a native of Rio de Janeiro. This
special workshop focuses on dancing Samba no Pe in high heels. Learn
to samba like the passistas do in a true Escola de Samba. This
long-awaited workshop will benefit everyone who wants to dance all
night in platform high heels. Quenia will give pointers to prevent
embarrassing slips and falls and will help you gain the confidence to
Samba like a true “Carioca da Gema.”
4:00 - 5:30pm: Samba Reggae/Samba DaBahia* with Quenia
Celebrate Bahia with a class dedicated to the dances from the
birthplace of Samba. This 1 1/2 hour high energy class focuses on the
different variations of Samba from Bahia, including Samba de Roda,
Samba Reggae and Samba Afro.
On another note we have rehearsals for the upcoming Student Show!!!
The show will be on March 6th 2010. We are hoping to have a fairly
large turnout and it will be held in a beautiful theater this year!!

Nonprofit Incorporation and Tax Exempt Status Workshop
When: Tuesday, January 12th, 2010, 1-4 p.m.
Where: VLA, 1 East 53rd Street, NY, NY 10022 (Auditorium)
**There is CLE available for this class.
This three-hour introductory workshop introduces individuals, organizations and practicing attorneys to the basics of nonprofit incorporation and federal and state tax exemption. Workshop includes course e-book with this pertinent information, along with information on fiscal sponsorships programs as well as sample forms and documents.
This workshop provides individuals, organizations and practicing attorneys with valuable information about starting a nonprofit organization. State issues to be covered include articles of incorporation, bylaws, and the first organization meeting. Federal issues include the Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3) and corresponding regulations, application for employer identification number, IRS disclosure rules, unrelated business taxable income, charitable contributions, and restrictions on lobbying. VLA requires all applicants seeking Nonprofit Incorporation and Tax Exempt Status services through VLA to attend this workshop before a volunteer attorney can be assigned to them.
This class will be taught by Sergio Mu?oz Sarmiento, Esq., VLA's Associate Director.
