War Peace: The One Drop Rule featuring Jason Samuels Smith!
War Peace: The One Drop Rule, a youth driven hip hop theater piece that imagines the Bay Area as a potential war zone in a time of protracted drought. Directed by Marc Bamuthi Joseph, War Peace is collaboratively written and performed by Chinaka Hodge, Rafael Casal, Daveed Diggs, and Nico Cary with choreography by Emmy Award winning tap dancer Jason Samuels Smith.
Click here for an interview with the director and an excerpt from the performance:http://www.vimeo.com/8851307

The Living Word Project (LWP) creates verse-based work that is spoken through the body, illustrated by visual and sonic scores, and in communication with the important social issues and movements of the immediate moment.
LWP is the theater's connection from Shakespeare's quill to Kool Herc's turntables; from Martha Graham's cupped hand to Nelson Mandela's clenched fist: a new voice for a new politic. The Repertory Works of the LWP premiere at either the Living Word Festival or the Hip Hop Theater Festival Bay Area, then tour nationally and internationally year round, and are presented before audiences numbering over 100,000.

MEMORIAL TRIBUTE FOR RICHARD JENNINGS - SATURDAY, APRIL 17, 2010, FROM 6 P.M. AT SAINT PETER’S CHURCH

Dear Friends,

Sandy Jordan and Pat Vingo just sent me the following information about the wonderful tribute being given for Richard Jennings:

RICHARD JENNINGS MEMORIAL SERVICE
Our friend and devoted jazz advocate, Mr. Richard Jennings, passed away on Thursday, 18 February 2010. A memorial tribute will be held on Saturday, April 17th at 6:00 pm, Saint Peter's Church, 54th St. and Lexington Ave. Among the many musicians performing will be Randy Weston, Barry Harris, Ruth Brisbane, Junior Mance, Bill Saxton, Rene McLean, Patience Higgins, Bob Cunningham, Larry Ridley, Jackie Williams and Leroy Williams.

A massive outpouring of music, love and respect from musicians and friends will show how much he was loved by the jazz community. Richard, a long-time friend, volunteered for everything; he was always willing to help; he lent his strength and smarts to every jazz committee; and he donated money when needed. I first met him through Pat as the producer of jazz activities at the United Nations Jazz Society, which he had organized back in 1959. He was so serious about sharing his love of the music; he did so much to increase awareness and appreciation of this music he loved! Those of you who came to my birthday parties will remember him as that handsome gentle and friendly man who sat between Pat Vingo and Katherine Cox at the Welcoming Table, every year! Those who came to Saint Peter’s Church’s All Nite Soul will remember him as the one who sat at the Musicians’ Table, calmly greeting and directing the musicians to where they should go, every year! He supported every jazz event, and was a member and volunteer of every jazz organization. Musicians and the jazz community will miss him enormously.

Please join his many many friends at Saint Peter’s Church on Saturday, April 17, from 6 p.m. to celebrate his rich full life.

Love,
Cobi Narita
