EAST COAST:

OPEN DANCE HISTORY COURSE AT JULLIARD
Choreographer Henning Rübsam offers a non-credit course all about SWAN LAKE at Juilliard's evening division this fall.
The fascination with the ballet Swan Lake is a phenomenon that would not have been thought possible after its initial premiere in Moscow in 1877 when it was deemed a failure.
The public's reaction to the movie "Black Swan" and the tremendous box-office success of subsequent performances of the ballet Swan Lake by many different ballet companies invite a deeper and more detailed examination and discussion of this particular masterwork.
This course explores why it is the most enduring and beloved example of classical ballet. In ten classes, Rübsam will shed light on the production history of the ballet, analyze Tchaikovsky's score and interview famous Swan Queens of today and yesteryear to help illuminate the legendary dual role of good and evil, Odette/Odile—including the challenge of transformation from white to black swan.
The first guest will be American Ballet Theatre's ballet mistress and former prima ballerina Susan Jaffe.

The Juilliard School Evening Division, 155 West 65th Street, NYC 10023
Thursday 5:30 - 7pm
Sept. 15 - Dec. 22, 2011

HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT TAKING PART IN THE TAP IN RIO FESTIVAL?
Tap in Rio is a yearly event that takes place on the last week of January (summertime in Brazil). It runs through five days of intensive workshops and master classes of tap dance, rhythm studies, body percussion, Lindy Hop, improvisation and other themes of interest to tap dancers (Hip Hop, musical
perception, stage floor amplifying, etc). An evening of performances, the Tap Challenge, jam session, tap talks, and the “Outstanding Contribution Award” help to make Tap in Rio a central event in the calendar of Brazilian tap dancers.

A block away from famous Copacabana beach, the event takes place in the pleasant settings of the Nós da Dança studios (www.nosdadanca.com.br).

Aspiring to boost local interest for tap, to raise awareness and to stimulate cooperation between Brazilian students and professionals, the festival centers on the Brazilian tap scene. However, international visitors have always been welcome and we also feature international guests (along the years we had the pleasure of
receiving Chloe Arnold, Heather Cornell, Lionel Arthur, Jason Samuels Smith, Cíntia Chamecki and Katherine Kramer). Most leading tap professionals of Brazil have been included in the event: Adriana Salomão, Adriana Brunato, Amalia Machado, Bia Mattar, Bruce Henri, (musical perception), Bruno Barros (Lindy Hop), Charles Renato, Christiane Mattalo, Cíntia Martin, Érica Belo, Flávia Costa, Flávio Salles,
Frank Ejara (street dance), Luiz Cruz (sound, miking taps), Hebert Stalin , Juliana Castro, Leonardo Sandoval, Luizz Baldijão, Marcela Castilho, Maurício Silva, Munique Mattos (body percussion), Rafa "Multiartista" (body percussion), Rafael Rocha (percussion), Robertinho Silva (percussion), Samanta Varela, Sérgio Rocha (percussive dance), Steven Harper, Thiago Marcelino, Valeria Pinheiro and Wellington Lopes (lindy hop).

An average of 90-100 students usually participate in the event. They come from the four corners of Brazil, from Argentina and Uruguay. The event sets the stage for an intense week of studies and exchanges - a strong human experience. The end of January sees Rio as it prepares for its world-famous Carnaval. The
energy level is high and the nightlife (for those who still have energy) booms. For those who wish to make this trip a total “Tap + Brazil” experience, we can also organize extra-curricular percussion or samba dance classes.

The 11th edition of the Tap in Rio Festival will take place January 24-28, 2012. The event is organized by Steven Harper and Adriana Salomão.

“Tap in Rio = Tap in Paradise. An experience you will cherish forever!! The rhythmic
pulse of the samba beat and the joie de vivre of the people, together, make the festival an incredibly inspiring and reinvigorating celebration. The positive energy and enthusiasm of the hosts Steven Harper and Adriana Salamao creates a beautiful sense of community for all of the students and teachers. You will enjoy challenging, musically and technically inspiring classes, taught by passionate and accomplished teachers. And then, you can take a break to savor the delicious brazilian food on Copacabana beach, just blocks away from the studio. The Jam Session is brought to life with the sounds of Brazil and the excitement of the community. The showcase is an awesome platform to be inspired by the works of others. You will leave this festival with a new sense of musicality, more passion in your dancing, and refreshed by the beautiful landscape and culture. This is a mandatory annual event for me. I drop everything and go!! There is no better feeling than to celebrate Tap Dance with these amazing dancers in one of my favorite cities in the world! I hope to see you at Tap in Rio 2012!!!” - Chloe Arnold
