AFRICAN DIASPORA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL November 25, 201 at the Thalia Theater at Symphony Space Opening the African Diaspora International Film Festival is The Story of Lovers Rock, a feature length documentary that tells the story of an era and a music that defined a generation in the late 70s and 80s. Lovers Rock is romantic reggae that was uniquely British. It developed from a small UK scene to become a global brand through the likes of UB40 and Maxi Priest.
Born in Barbados, director of THE STORY OF LOVERS ROCK Menelik Shabazz is recognized as one of the key Black independent filmmakers in the United Kingdom. His classic film BURNING AN ILLUSION will also screen during Opening Night and Mr. Shabazz will be on hand to discuss both films.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater will kick-off a five-week New York season on November 30th with a star-studded gala benefit at New York City Center that begins an exciting new era led by Artistic Director Robert Battle. Honorary Chairs for the special evening are First Lady Michelle Obama and the legendary model Iman. Nine-time Grammy Award-winner John Legend will join Ailey’s Alicia Graf Mack in an exclusive live performance of “If It’s Magic,” choreographed by Artistic Director Emerita Judith Jamison to the timeless music of Stevie Wonder. CHICAGO HUMAN RHYTHM PROJECT: GLOBAL RHYTHMS The Mexican Folkloric Dance Company of Chicago (Nov. 27 only) will present dances from Veracruz and Jalisco, Mexican states with a rich tradition of intricate stomping steps. Ensemble Español Spanish Dance Theater (Nov. 26 only) performs a suite of Flamenco- style dances from Andalucia, the southern part of Spain, including its masterwork Bolero to the hypnotic music of Maurice Ravel.
Step Afrika! (Nov. 26 and 27), returning for the third year with all-new works, is the first professional company in the world dedicated to stepping, a unique dance tradition that grew out of the song and dance rituals practiced by historically African-American fraternities and sororities in the mid-1900s. Step Afrika! creates an "ocean of sound" with contemporary stepping and hip hop beside ancient Zulu dances, South African gumboot dancing and more.

WORLDWIDE LUTHIER MUSIC AND DANCE SCHOOL will host a music concert and a dance performance the 23rd and 24th of October, and many more activities to raise funds for Japan's tragedy. With the title Japó, no t’oblidem (Japan, we have not forgotten) the Centre Català de Kansai is promoting a charity campaign of the 22nd to 24th October in Barcelona to raise funds to help the children affected by the earthquake that struck Japan last 11th March. For this event, the Centre Català de Kansai has the support of renowned artists such as Roser Font, Guillem Alonso, the winner of the 2010 Dansacat award; Joan Soler, a Butoh dancer; Carmen Werner, 2007 National Dance Award; Heidi Durning/Fujima Kanso O, a great specialist in fusion dance and Nihon Buyou. The program of activities includes music and dance performances, literature workshops with first-rank writers such as Teresa Duran, presenting the work of Shuntaro Tanikawa and Miquel Desclot and Josep Pedrals. There will also be workshops on business, Japanese language, and book-binding. It will also be possible to purchase paper cranes. The charity raffle where participants will win splendid gifts, will take place on the 24th at 20:30h. All proceedings will be donated to the Red Cross in Japan and to the Association of Jungian Analysts in Japan (AJAJ) and the Japan Assoctiation of Sandplay Therapy.
