Emmy Award winning choreographer Jason Samuels Smith celebrates his first season of full-length programming at The Joyce with a performance that feature two world premieres, repertory works from his company ACGI (Anybody Can Get It), and excerpts from Chasing The Bird - a project developed from his tribute to Charlie Parker and danced by "exquisite stylists" (The New York Times) Dormeshia Sumbry-Edwards, Chloe Arnold and Michelle Dorrance. The piece combines a diverse mixture of tap as both a musical and visual art form enhanced by the artistry of live musicians, as well as some of Charlie Parker's original tunes that Smith transcribed and choreographed.

Some of today's most exceptional male dancers and choreographers pay homage to the Pillow's 80th Anniversary and pioneering founder Ted Shawn and his company of Men Dancers in this once-in-a-lifetime program. In this unique show, an extraordinary cast of approximately twenty outstanding dancers and choreographers of all ages and traditions will perform original choreography and share extraordinary personal stories with the audience.
The rotating cast of performers will include Dance Theatre of Harlem founder Arthur Mitchell; tap superstar Jason Samuels Smith; Trent Kowalik, one of the original "Billy" performers from the musical Billy Elliot; master choreographer Lar Lubovitch; choreographer, performer, and noted dance writer Gus Solomons Jr.; legendary former New York City Ballet principal Jock Soto; hoofer prodigy and choreographer Cartier Williams; Robert Swinston, Director of Choreography for Merce Cunningham Dance Company; Festival 2012 artist John Heginbotham; and many other surprise guests. SLURP by Adam Metzger, a fusion dance company based in New York City will be staging their inaugural repertory showcase. This showcase will include excerpts from a new evening length work that is being developed. The remainder of the showcase will present a variety of dance pieces displaying the versatility and diversity of tap dance. WHEN I WAS TWENTY ONE is an exploration of hunger and drive in finding new directions for innovative dance. How far can we stretch a genre before it crosses the boundary into another art form? Dancing on the lines between styles is new way of bridging previously disparate dance communities and bringing together performers from all walks of life.
